The Centre for Science in the Public Interest

The center for science in the public interest is a nonprofit organization that concentrates on improving safety of the food supply and nutritional quality of food supplied. The center for science in the public health promotes health by educating people about alcohol and nutrition. In addition, the organization represents the public interest before various bodies like legislative, judicial and regulatory.  The organization has targeted the restaurant industry by highlighting the impact the industry has on citizen health.  The organization has encouraged food labeling in restaurants.  The center for science  in the public interest and  other  health and consumer  organizations  have encouraged  president  Obama, and his administration to promote calorie labeling (Dunn, 2012).


Restaurants, supermarkets and chain movie theatres, should label their products.  Also, alcoholic beverages and vending machines should be labeled.  If the restaurants, supermarkets and movie theaters do not label calories, consumers will not be aware of the calorie count in their ready to eat foods, restaurant foods and beverages.  The 2010 health care reform requires restaurants and retail food stores to label calorie in their foods. The article will impact the restaurant industry greatly if the Obama administration encourages calorie labeling. All restaurants in the country will be required to state the amount of calorie in their food they sell to consumers. This will enable consumers understand calorie amount in each food offered.


Currently, restaurants do not label the calorie count in the foods they sell as the law has not been passed.  The article will persuade the restaurant industry to change as restaurants will be required to comply with the provision of the 2010 health care reform laws.  All restaurants will label their foods regardless of the state. In 2008, New York City implemented laws to encourage restaurant to indicate the amount of calories in various foods, in their menu, but the restaurants declined to implement the law.  However, restaurants in New York City and Philadelphia are required to post the calorie counts on the menus. Therefore, the article will make the restaurant industry change (The center for science in the public interest, 2012).


The issues raised by the center for science in the public interest are justified.  The rate of obesity among child and adults in many nations like US has increased.  This has in turn, led to other chronic diseases like hypertension, diabetes and cancer. In addition, it has increased the cost of   treating chronic diseases. The center for science in the public interest has attributed the increase with the restaurant industry.  The food industry has contributed to high cases of obesity in the country by selling foods with high calorie counts and not sharing information with customers (Dunn, 2012).


Restaurants do not share information with customers about the amount of calories in their diets, and this has hindered customers from making proper choices.  Consumers are unable to select foods that contain low amount of calorie as they do not have information pertaining to those foods. Thus, they consume foods that contain high calorie count and hence suffer from obesity. The center for science in the public interest claims that labeling calories in foods will reduce the cases of obesity as consumers will choose foods with low calorie amount.  The restaurant industry should change and give consumers healthy priority.


Restaurants should consider the effect their foods have on customer health.  Restaurants should share information with consumers.  They should start provoding foods rich in vitamins and minerals and low in calorie. This can only be achieved through calorie labeling as restaurants will comply with the policy.  The center for science in the public interest should continue advocating for customers rights and promoting health through education and development of laws (The center for science in the public interest, 2012).
