Differentiated Instruction

Differentiated Instruction

I believe thatdifferentiated instructions are instructions prepared to suit the academic expectation, experience, and interests of a student. It is a way to ensure that students get lessons that are student-centered. In this regard, students direct learning while the teacher facilitates the process. Differentiated instruction is a topic that is very essential because it determines the effectiveness of the curriculum and individual lessons. I believe that differentiating instruction promotes the quality of instruction, in lessons that involve a diverse collection of learners. A teacher that uses differentiated instruction provides alternative ways for students to access the curriculum and acquire knowledge. It is crucial to assess the students before initiating differentiation of instruction. This gives the teacher prior knowledge of what the students know, and they do not know about a topic before preparing to teach it. Prior assessment of students also enables the teacher to learn the interests, learning methods, and preferences of the students.

I believe differentiated instruction involves consideration of student choices. Learners have choices regarding the way they engage in lesson activities. I think this motivates students to participate and own the learning process. I believe that differentiated instructions are of many unique forms. Teachers can differentiate their instruction through the curriculum or content of lessons. For example, I think that the process of accessing the content can be the means for differentiating. The depth of the lesson content is the other way to differentiate instruction. Content is the product while the curriculum is the process or method of packaging instruction. I believe that teachers can differentiate learning by use of technology to deliver lessons. The outcomes of learning should be the same for all students regardless of the method of learning. Parents have a role to play in differentiated instruction because they understand their children more than anyone else. Therefore, teachers should communicate with the parents, in relation to curriculum content, academic expectations, student problems, student strengths, interests, and student experiences.

In relation to the benefits, differentiating instruction facilitates an individualized learning. Through differentiated instruction, students become engaged in the learning process. I think that the use of differentiated lessons by teachers places on students the responsibility for individual learning. This promotes discipline in classrooms as teachers provide a differentiated instruction. Teachers who differentiate their lessons provide students with a motivation for understanding and achievement of results. Differentiate learning addresses the individual needs of every student by adjusting the instruction to match the experience and skills of each learner, in the lessons. Students make choices and gain excitement to participate in activities and achieve gains. Differentiation of instruction allows the linking of curriculum and activities outside the classroom. As students take ownership of their learning processes, they become involved and interactive, and participate by using individual styles of learning to access, interpret, and express what they have learnt.

As a future teacher, I believe that designing lessons should incorporate the individual student needs, so as to create learning products that are easy to implement and are effective. It is, therefore, crucial to conduct an assessment of students and identify issues of disparity that may affect learning. The teacher can do this through an observation of the education needs and interests of the students. Designing lessons must respond to problems that are the outcome of the assessment. I believe that optimum learning occurs when teachers use methods of instruction and content that captures student interest, and education needs.
