The Effect of Classroom Management on students’ Academic Performance

My Empathy

Background:

Having worked as a teacher and a headmaster for more than 9 years, I strongly believe I have enough experience in teaching profession. This is what drove me to take this study simply because I have worked as a teacher and I know the challenges that teachers undergo when they are exercising their duties. With the experience, that I got when I was teaching, it’s a clear indication that performance of the student is affected by so many things. Management of the classroom as well as how the activities are delivered largely counts to the performance of the student. During the five years when I was working as an intermediate school teacher, I learnt that there are different ways on how students can be handled to develop their class performance.

My experience in classroom management was first felt in 1995 when in high school; from my then mathematics teacher. A s you know mathematics is so difficult for the majority of students, nevertheless it was so engaging for all students in his classroom for the reason that he never despised students answers whatever and if one did not hand in, or write down his assignment, he did not shout or refer them to the school administration and instead he talked to them as an older brother. This portrayed the future as a brave new world through our behaviors. In contrast, bad classroom management was apparent with our chemistry class teacher who issued handout after handout randomly through the semester and mocked some students about their utterance.  His class was so boring.

Six years later, I started working as a mathematics teacher in elementary school. My first day at work made me believe that teaching certain subjects in a class is a real problem which required commitment of the teacher and complete participation of the students as well. In order to ensure that a classroom is ready for learning, one must ensure that the environment is somehow educationally favorable. My empathy was conspicuous especially towards the students when I wanted to discipline them as questions crossed my mind, What my students thought about me, How they perceived me, and What they really needed then among other questions. It was then that I decided to create a special approach with which I could obtain the inclinations of my students and to achieve the purpose of the educational process.

During the five years when I was working as an intermediate school teacher, I learnt that there are different ways to handle students to help them develop their class performance. In addition, the experience gave me a clear indication that performance of the students was affected by so many things like management of the classroom and the deliverance of content.  Some students were affected by their teachers or their classmates or education environment that did not always reflect the real situation in Education.

Throughout the four years when I was working as a headmaster for both elementary and intermediate school. From my fellow teachers I discovered that when one had prepared their students well, they understood the prepared content well and improved performance. For instance, the teachers who supplied pupils with clear tasks, goals, and requirement and informed them of progress made their students achieve high marks.  In addition, urging students to cerebrate, to practice and reinforce is successful methods to enhance the performance of students. Moreover, there are teachers who encouraged their students to involve through issue resolving, queries, debate.

On the other hand, without the proper prior preparation of one’s class, it was quite difficult to have a better performance of one’s students.  For instance, Teacher who did not have a clear plan, knowledge, leadership qualities, and lacked consideration of the individual differences among students achieved poor performance. The most memorable moment of my being a head teacher was during my visit to a teacher’s classroom where students answered randomly without incentive for correct answers. I learnt that, though some fellow teachers worked hard and without proper preparations, students’ performances were not pleasing.

Teaching of certain subjects in a class is a real problem where the teacher’s commitment and students’ participation matter most. I did major in mathematics and what it calls to handle a mathematics call is not and easy task. In order to ensure that a classroom is ready for learning, ensure that the environment is somehow educational. In proper preparation of oneself and the students, I discovered that this was accompanied with complete understanding of one’s work and hence high performance. Conversely, lack of preparation of for one’s class is a way to promote poor performance among students. In support of this, it is possible to have a hardworking teacher whose class is never properly prepared and so the students grades fail to please and the teacher wonders why but the trick is concealed in proper preparation coupled with hard work.

I choose this study simply because I feel what I have had from experience is sufficient and useful to many who want to change the performance of their students.
