Classroom Management Strategies

A challenging experience that I have ever had in being a teacher is maintaining silence in the classroom where students were very noisy while they were in class. In class students have different skills, interests, knowledge and abilities and this is one challenge that the teachers usually face in meeting the varieties of needs which they are confronted with. In my teaching career it was hard to keep the students silent as they didn’t listen to me. I kept telling the students to remain silent but they still kept talking and because of this I become nervous and spoke faster and louder.

When I was in the class all that I hoped for was that the bell would ring so that I can leave the class immediately. Because of this I was very depressed and I doubted if I was going to be able to continue teaching. I thought of giving up but I then decided to try some other strategies which would help me relate with this students well. The strategy which I used in order to keep my class in control was through classroom management strategies.

I remembered that a class that is poorly managed was going to waste the time and the life of every person who was involved in that class. I started by accepting my responsibility and knew that everything that was going on in the class was my fault and knew that the bad things that were happening were because I allowed them to happen. I then set procedures on how I wanted them to ask questions, the need for being silent when another student is asking question and how they should ask to use the rest room (Cummings, C 2000).

The next thing is by communicating the procedures to the students so that they can understand what is expected of them and why it is important. The other strategy which I used in order to relate well with the students is by giving them examples and stories whereby at one point I talked about a favorite cartoon and then I happened to imitate the character of one of them. This was of good help because the students were able to see me as a friend and not s a teacher hence they enjoyed my presence.

I also used another method of calming the students down instead of telling then to be quiet, I decide that the students who would be the last one to keep quiet was going to sing a song in front of the whole class (Burden, P 2000). These strategies had a very great impact on the students as the class was calm because most students were afraid of standing in front of the classroom and sing a song to the others so they maintained silence in order to avoid this punishment. I was able to notice that these strategies were successful because while in class and when asking questions the students were responding very well to the questions and even asked questions whenever they didn’t understand in a proper order.
