Effective Incorporation and Alignment of ELL Proficiency with Academic Standards

One of the English Language Learners proficiency standards involves the use of English as the official language of communication by students in the school setting for both social and instructional aspects of learning. This enables the learners to get a clear understanding of the use English in other areas of learning which are not necessarily English. Similarly, most of the subjects are taught in English in most schools hence allows the learners to gain a better method of applying the English that is learnt in class.

The learners should be asked to adhere to frequent communication with their peers in English as a way of improving on their spoken English. The learners should be encouraged to relay information and write narratives in English during the lesson and after when they are interacting with their peers and teachers. Teachers who carry out English lessons should incorporate concepts which will present an opportunity to think and provide feedback in English.

The bridge between English language proficiency and academic success is quite narrow such that English language learners who are known to excel in English should be encouraged to apply the same strategy in order to excel in the other areas. This gap can be bridged by ensuring that English proficiency is prioritized such that the learners will not be faced with problems in understanding concepts in other subjects.

As a way of effectively incorporating and aligning English language learner proficiency standards with the academic standards, teachers should keep into consideration the complexity of the language in relation to the cognitive level of the learner. This increases the rate of understanding and perception of content.
