Ethical Dilemma

Ethics in the career of police refers to the adherence of the provisions of the career. For example, one should have a high dedication to his or her duties, ethics in this career demand that officers should not receive bribes or gratuities to perform their duties. They should remain loyal to their duty, for example, they should responsible for every action they take in accordance to the demands of the job. Professionalism refers to abiding by all the demands of the career in exciting all the duties, for example, one should not exercise excessive force in the arrest of a suspect. Gratuity and bribe refers to a favor extended to a party to carry out duties which are in most cases an obligation of the party.

An ethical dilemma would be in a situation whereby a police officer receives an enormous bribe, which could see him or her totally change his or her lifestyle in order to thwart the course of justice. For example, in order to give wrong evidence on a crime. The officer in the rank of a corporal who was in a crime scene got real details of what happened in the crime scene may have an offer to receive up to one million dollars from a tycoon to give wrong evidence in the case for him or her ton win the case. The corporal here experiences an ethical dilemma because the offer will be hard to reject. The corporal having been at the scene of the crime is a paramount party in the case as his evidence could change the case in accordance to what he desires.

The style of leadership I would choose to advice the corporal in such a situation is integrity based leadership. When the officer has integrity, he would not mind letting go of the offers and allowing justice to take its course. A professional decision, which exists in this case, is on letting the course of just to prevail. The career demands that cops should never twist the course of justice.The problem solving step I employ in this situation is the analysis stage. This involves weighing different options in the problems. Professionalism demands that all officers should always have a commitment to allow justice to take its course. I rely on the model of objectivity in ethical decision making; this model demands that ethical decision makers should look at decision making problems objectively rather than subjectively.

I apply this model in this decision by sticking to the professional demands of the career that state that there should never be interference of police officers with the course of justice.I would take such a step in the case because justice is at stake here. The course of justice is a substantially paramount dynamic in the law enforcement career. Cases in which justice is at stake a highly critical because it is in the large part what the officers are employed to do, giving in to bribery by police officers in order to pervert the courses of justice would essentially signify no importance of the police force. The police career is a service to the community if an officer has no commitment to the service provision; for example, by negating act such as bribery than the force would be a negative service.
