National Security Issues and Terrorism
The threat of terrorism has been on the rise in recent years. Occurrences such as the 9/11 attacks serve as evidence of the growing threat of terrorism around the world. The Middle East has traditionally been the epicenter of terrorism. Countries such as Iraq and Afghanistan are home to dozens of hardcore terrorist groups. However, Latin America now serves as a significant region in terms of the global terrorism threat. Firstly, as a hotspot for drug trafficking, Latin America provides an excellent base for terrorist networks to thrive. This is extremely dangerous in terms of facilitating different activities by terrorist activities.
It is also vital to note that Iran has had excellent ties with numerous countries in Latin America (Farah, 2007). For instance, Venezuela and Iran have strong bilateral relations on numerous economic fronts. Additionally, Venezuelan president is a close ally of the Iranian government. Considering the massive contribution of Iran to international terrorism, the bilateral links countries in South America are a warning signal. It is also essential to highlight that South Americans can easily gain access into the United States. Consequently, terrorist groups might South Americans to plan attacks in the United States.
Islamist presence in Latin America has been on the rise. Such groups are dangerous perpetrators of terrorist activities around the globe (Wright, 2007). Their presence in Latin America is undoubtedly a warning signal in terms of national security and terrorist threat to the United States. These perspectives highlight the growing threat of terrorism from Latin America. It is fundamentally essential for the federal government to address this concern with a sense of urgency. Approaches such as sanctions to uncooperative countries might serve as excellent stepping stones for dealing with these threats.
