Prospects Of A Career In Petroleum Engineering

Petroleum engineering is the career I would like to take up in college as I have developed an intense interest in oil extraction as well as discovery of oil wells. The fascination which surrounds the diverse conditions presented to the extractors has been equally motivational, in enabling me to develop an interest in the area. Other than the experiences associated with oil extraction, the procedures which are involved in detection of oil wells before extraction begins have been fundamental in choosing the career (Garner, 2008).The personal interest to pursue petroleum engineering as a career was developed after careful soul searching in addition to appreciating my exemplary performance in physical sciences.

This decision was also influenced by an academic trip which was conducted by out physics teacher back in high school whereby we got a chance to visit various oil fields in Brazil. This opportunity enabled me to interact with two petroleum engineers who were very much willing to share all what appertains to their field of work. The discussion was especially fruitful since the two realized my exclusive interest in the career and they really challenged the budding dream inside Olufemi, Bamidele,  Fadairo, (2009).Petroleum engineering involves use of computers, application of probability analysis and new technology such as horizontal drilling in addition to enhanced oil recovery to identify oil wells. Use of modern technology has made it quite easier to identify the wells hence making the profession even more challenging.

As most of the extractions usually occur in deserts as well as in deep seas, it becomes quite important for the petroleum engineer to have reliable knowledge on aspects such as geomechanics in addition to thermo-hydraulics. This provides an opportunity for me to broaden my scope of thinking as well as learning in order to be conversant with the environment and difficult situations posed by the expedition (University of Alberta, 2010).Petroleum engineers are usually categorized into three major groups dependent on the specific site of operation. Reservoir engineers are usually involved in enhancing the production of oil or gas by using well production levels and advanced recovery techniques.

After the appropriate technique has been identified, eh drilling engineers decide on the most efficient drilling, production and injection techniques for various wells. The last operation involves subsurface engineers who carry out maintenance practices of surface equipment which will separate the extracted fluid into individual components (Lyons, and Plisga, 2005). Petroleum engineering is a very interesting career for individuals who are ready and willing to learn about advanced technology as well as other related disciplines such as thermodynamics. Although my decision was solely due to nurturing of a childhood dreams well as the opportunity to meet the real engineers at work, it is important for students aspiring to pursue the course to ensure that they have a sound physical sciences background so as to make the course more interesting (Hyne, 2001)
