Racism in Society

Introduction

Racism has become a major issue in the society for the last few decades. For the last few years most of the minority groups in the country have faced racism. For example, the minority groups have not been able to lived good life like other groups. For example, they have not been able to get quality education and have also been disadvantages both economically and socially. This has forced many writers to write about race relations in different countries. For example, Anna Julia Cooper and Maria W. Stewarth have written about race relation. The two authors have analyzed various challenges that are faced by different minority groups in the country. For example, they have analyzed how African Americans are disadvantaged. This paper explores race relations in the country as evidenced by the two writers listed above.

Discussion

Racism refers to belief that there are differences in traits and capacities of various groups as a result of their race. In addition, racism refers to people in the society being treated differently. People have different views about racial discrimination. Some people argue that there are differences between various races. This is because one race is inferior over another race. Hence, poor race relations. Others argue that there is no differences between various races and do not support racial discrimination. Racism has become a major problem in the society because of the negative impact caused by racism.

Most people in the society oppose racism because of the negative effect it has on the society. Despite global protest and condemnation, racism remains a major problem in the modern society. Racism in the society is evidenced by the discrimination of various groups in the society and mistreatment. In addition racism is evidenced in various institutions in the society. For instance, racism evidenced in the criminal justice system and learning institutions. Racism in the society started during slavery as most of the minority groups in the society were treated as slaves (Steinberg 2007).

Different people have different views about racism in the society. Most people including activities and various writers oppose racism due to the negative effect it has on people. First, racism in the society has affected the education standards of many people in the society. This is because minority groups in the society are not able to get education like other people in the society. This has in turn hindered them from getting employment. For example, most of the African American women have not been able to get education due to lack of enough income and unequal treatment in the society.

This is evidenced in various books written by Anna Julia Cooper and Maria W. Stewarth. The two authors have not supported racism in the society. For exampled, Anna campaigned for the rights of African American women in the society. Anna argued that African American women had been neglected and this affected their education standards. In her book,  ‘A voice from the South’, Anna encouraged the lifting of social standards of African American women so as to enable them improve their living standards. She also encouraged improvement of education standards of the African American women so as to enhance their determination. Like other people in the society, Anna argued that education and moral of black women was important in improving the social economic status and economic status of the African American community. This is because improving the education standards of African American women would help eliminate social inequality in the society by ensuring they are treated well( Cashmore &Troyna 1990).

Apart from encouraging African American women to get education, the author also emphasized that spiritual progress of African American women was important in improving the welfare of the African American community. The author claimed that educated and successful African American women should support the underprivileged people in the society and help them achieve their global hence improving the welfare of the community. The essay, ‘A voice from the South’ analyzed racism and socioeconomic challenges faced by African American community (Cashmore &Troyna 1990).

Additionally, Maria did not support racism. Like Anna, Maria argued that racial issues in the country had affected the living standards of African American women and subjected them to poverty and other minority groups. As a result, Maria wrote various essays opposing racism in the community. She argued that the relation between different groups in the society had deteriorated and affected the rights of various groups like minority groups (Cashmore &Troyna 1990).

Conclusion

In conclusion, race relations in the society have changed for the last few years. This is because most of the minority groups in the society have been treated badly and this has led to minority groups being disadvantaged. This is because the minority groups do not get education and are always socially disadvantaged as exemplified by Anna and Maria.
