Reconciling Personal, Organizational, Cultural Values and Ethics in a Global Setting

Introduction

Personal values are defined as the principles and beliefs which are present in our lives to enable us make decisions and choices in the course of our daily activities. Ideal personal values and principles are essential in identifying the personality of the individual.  Values are unique dependent on the cultural background, as well as, influenced by organizational values hence it is important to determine a mid-point where the various values are incorporated to enable the individual fit in a global setting. Ethics on the other hand refers to the aspect of conduct which is described as either good or bad dependent on the moral lesson attached to the activity. Ethics as an action-packed concept entails use of ones values to discern what is good and bad then proceed to carry out the good deeds, as well as, striving to do good always.  In order to be categorized as ethical, individual shave to present deeds that are consistent with their values without having to impose them on the individual. Ethics on the other hand vary from individuals, cultures and organizations hence reconciliation is necessary.

Reconciling personal values in the global setting

Individuals from different corners of the world share various values and ethical priorities such that it is possible to find different people possessing the same values. This results to a conclusion that some personal values can be termed as global due to similarity among different individuals. By placing personal values in a global setting and attempting to incorporate them in them to a global scenario, the reconciliation with global values is made easier (Widdows, 2009).


Some personal values do not have similar impacts or occurrences in other individual such that a crisis occurs when the individual interacts with others presenting antagonistic values. Therefore, it becomes important to understand the cause of the crisis, as well as, work towards obtaining neutral ground which will enable the crisis to be resolved and reconciliation is attained. Whenever crisis occur over clashing personal values with those of the global setting, it is significant to determine the good values as it is easier to reconcile good deeds than evils ones due to increased resistance from the individual portraying the good values being asked to bend towards evil (Meyers, 2010).


Reconciling organizational values in a global setting

Each and every organization has its own set of values which are used to govern the entire place such that employees, as well as, management are expected to present the most appropriate behavior at all times. Consequently, the global organizations have their own set of values that tends to provide for individuals from different nationalities to enhance chances of obtaining the mission and vision of an organization (Hutchings, 2010).


Organizational values are formulated to ensure that the workforce is able to execute different tasks effectively with minimal conflicts being realized. Such harmonious organizations are made possible by instilling good values for all members to observe. On the global setting especially for organizations that are carry out their operations all over the world, certain values for local organizations may clash with those of multi-national corporations hence making it difficult to reconcile the two. Therefore, global organizational values are instilled through use of local organizational values which are later on applied to the global setting when the need arises (Meyers, 2010).


However, some organizational values such as corporate responsibility are present in all local organizations such that reconciling the same in a global setting is quite easy. Consequently, it is difficult to establish a reconciliatory concept on the basis of applying some values which are reflected in local organizations as some of them are complex especially where protocols concerning the specific country of operation are overbearing. This makes it even difficult to reconcile the two aspects due to the border values as individuals from different countries may possess various beliefs regarding the global organizations (Widdows, 2009).


Reconciling cultural values in a global setting

Cultural values are relative independent on the nature of business that is being conducted due to the diverse cultures that are present in the world. Various cultures in the world have their own unique values that unite them, as well as, making them different from the others. Hence it would be quite challenging to make such people adopt new values whose basis they cannot comprehend. Similarly, culture is a way of life such individuals presenting the same cultural values have grown with them for considerable periods and the individual carrying out the reconciliation has to ensure that they are well prepared to face the criticism associated with the move (Hutchings, 2010).


However, different fields in the global setting have maintained similar cultural values such as treating employees and customers as key assets of an organization. This cultural value of organizations yields a better opportunity for an individual aiming at reconciling the cultural values at a global setting. Hence in individual cultural values, sharing with the less fortunate could be part of the doing good therefore it is not strange to engage in such events.  Consequently, the same individual when incorporated into a multi-national corporation will find it easier to reconcile with other cultural values which portray similar priorities. Thus the reconciliation of individual cultural values with those of the entire globe may not be as challenging as diversity in cultural values does not delude lack of similarities in good deeds (Widdows, 2009).


Reconciling ethics in a global setting

Personal ethics are often clashing with global perception of ethics as a way of making people absolve to do evil and in turn participate in doing well for all. Ethical values such as sticking to the truth despite the circumstances that are prevailing in a situation may be easier for an individual case but difficult to implement the same in a global setting. However, due to the quest for harmony and peace, most people have developed ethical values which enable them to live harmoniously with others such that armed with similar perceptions reconciliation of the personal ethics to the global concept of ethics is possible (Hutchings, 2010).


Conclusion

Despite the fact that most of the personal values and ethics pose great challenges in reconciling them to the entire global setting, through application of appropriate measures, reconciliation is enhanced. Consequently, the global setting cannot change to incorporate the individual with diverse values hence it is up to the person to ensure that they adjust their norms to fit into the world.
