Development Identity Conflicts

In the development of identity conflicts, individuals transform their lives and identities dependent on the circumstances that prevail at that specific time. In the case of Amber, her new job position required that she change her identity from that of being a student to being a working woman. This could be exhibited by the change in her wardrobe, as well as, the new car which symbolize her new status. This is a form of social status identity development whereby individuals change their general appearance so that they may fit in the new social class. Similarly, the change from traditional cultural dressing attire which could have been significant in determining her nationality could have been done way with due to pressure to try new dressing styles.


Consequently, the former friends failed to understand the situation which Amber was going through such that her career had changed, as well as, the nature of pressure presented by the new position. All these factors made her change her outwards appearance although the inner Amber remained unchanged. Similarly, to fit in the American culture, Amber had to change her identity as she was deemed to interact with a number of people in the course of duty hence no need to raise alarm on the country of origin.


In an attempt to understand her self amid the identity crisis, she establishes the fact that her personality has not changed despite the outwards change. This adds up to the fact that she doe not see any major changes in the usual Amber who has schooled in the states hence fails to ascertain the differences which are evident to her friends. Employment facilities could encourage maintenance of an individual’s culture by emphasizing the fact that professionals can be competent regardless of the nationality.
