Language Analysis of “Freedom”
Abstract
In his book Jonathan Franzen (2010) has used several elements of style. These styles include letter, syllable, word, phrase, sentence and punctuations. The purpose of this research is to show how the writer in his book uses the various language elements in his book. Like, he capitalizes ordinary words and uses letters in order to stand out to the reader. It is hypothesized that use of language increased readability of the book. Several methods will be used to carry out the research like, checklist, interviews, questionnaires, and participation.
Introduction
The main purpose of language is to transfer meaning. Since time in memory, the message from a sender to a recipient has never been the intended one since the two have different cognitive function. Despite this, Language uses several aspects to transfer meaning. In this research I want to expound on how the writer makes use of various elements of language to make his work outstanding and worth reading while retaining the meaning.
Literature review
There are very many rules that govern the use of language in any form of literature work. In his book William Struck, Jr (1918) outlined the various ways in which the elements of style like words, phrases, punctuations and letters should be used to avoid confusion and misunderstandings. In his book William Franzen (2010) explores the ways by which one uses elements of language a little bit artistically while introducing humor.
MethodsSeveral methods will be used to collect data on the language analysis of “Freedom”. This will help explore the characteristics, advantages and limitations of language elements of letter, syllable, word, phrase, sentence and punctuation in the book “Freedom” through the use of samples from the book, questionnaires, interviews, discussions and checklist
Sampling
Here, I will use examples from the book to clarify my stand and to provide examples of where language elements have been used to the advantage of writer as well as where the use is a limitation.
Discussions
These are forums that will present the perspective of other people on the use of language elements in the book. It will provide clarification and verification of various concepts.
Questionnaires
I will use well structured questions issued to interviewees to fill independently and give them back for analysis.
Checklists
This will be used to systematically observe the behavior of readers towards the book, against the expected results based on previous statistics.
Interviews
This will be a source of information where an individual will be lured to provide information from their own view about the language elements in the book.
Results
The results will be represented in the form of pie charts, histograms and line graphs.
Pie chart
This will be used to represent the results in the form of percentage and each percentage represented by an angle that will form a section of a circle.
Histogram
The results of the research will be represented in bars with each bar having a different level frequency.
Discussion
The research is aimed at proofing that language elements can be used artistically in literary to make it outstanding. The main limitation of this research is that different people with different cognitive functions can interpret meanings differently resulting to conflict.
