Nurse’s empowerment

According to Kanter Theory, organizational empowerment comprises of four main components which are imperative for structural empowerment promotion.  Access to resources and information and the availability of the right skills to fulfill the work and responsibilities expected makes it possible to achieve more subordinates.  Employees with the belief that the manager has much ability to make things get done are more likely to come up with a highly functioning team compared to those who do not believe in their manager’s ability (Kanter, 1989).


According to this organization the nurse are empowered through their access to resources, information, support, and have better chances to develop and discover. These are the activities which go beyond the practice scope of their current opportunities and roles. They can access information that is beneficial for them to fulfill their expected roles and to better understand the best sources of finding the right information (Grossman, & Valiga 2008).


Further, the nurses in this organization are empowered psychologically which   improves their motivation and commitment to work. Based on a survey, of 46 nurses in this organization, 40 of them believed that they have greater chances of succeeding when all the barriers that prevent them form accomplishing their duties are removed. Some of these barriers include lack of access to resources and information, poor pay, and unbearable environment. The organization has worked towards ensuring that the healthcare facility is a place that ensures all its employees are psychologically empowered by offering the nurse and other staff members of the support they need. Therefore, this organization can be rated as being Very supportive in empowering the nurse.


 2. The “No” responses and how to turned into “Yes.”

It is highly possible to find No responses among assistant nurse managers (ANMs) and Nurse  managers (NM)working  at the acute-care setting due to the complexity involved. The No answers may be in response to lack of all the necessary equipment and information that would help them to accomplish their work. In order to ensure that the ANMs and the NM are empowered, it is important to first know their perceptions concerning their sense of empowerment. Positive perceptions will lead to the staff nurses empowerment, thus, allowing the high quality and safe care service provision to patients. .


Another aspect which affects the empowerment of nurse is the work overload as a result of shortage of nurses mainly in the critical areas of the hospital setting. The attainment of   cost-effective and continuity of quality care within the acute care setting is mainly dependent on recruitment and retainment of knowledgeable and experienced nurses. In order to deal with the challenges facing the management of challenges and changes that take place within the health care system in an effective way, it is important to leave out the traditional management paradigm within the hierarchical control and power to a much better model that ensures control and power is shred with the subordinates (Trofino, 2000).


Power sharing will enable nurse leaders to empower nurse to take up critical roles in the process of optimizing opportunities and in the process of change within the professional practice.  This means that lack of empowerment will hinder the nurses from maximumly carrying out their daily duties and to provide patients with high quality nursing care based on the   professional standards.


How I will empower myself

Empowering myself meaning doing something on my current situation with the aim of becoming successful in the future.  Through knowledge, I will empower myself to learn more on the required skills if my work. Continuous training and education will also lead me to develop and accomplish new things.  Development of positive relationship is possible when I try to understand and figure out the aspects that cause conflicts with my mentors. Such aspects include jealous, anger, and lack of corporation.  I will know how to handle negative aspects in order to empower myself in development of positive relationship with my mentors.


Having a role model will also act as another way of empowering I. developing alliances with  other nurses with  greater experience within the nursing  profession will be able to share with me  their life and work balance values. I will gain strategies they are using to balance their career life and family life and act as roles model in assisting me in areas I find difficult within the nursing filed. These are the role models whom I respect t and admire.


Last is having good connection through a well established network. Networking will help me get connected with the people I have wished to know for them to assist me in the nursing filed. These people will assist me now some of the things that I do not know. A properly developed network is essential for it helps in be find better business opportunities and developments or in search of another job.
