Toshiba appears to be following a forward looking corporate and global strategy. Toshiba has embraced the practice of innovation with the manufacture of a wide diversity of electronics to suits its diverse clientele. The wide selection of products enables the company to live up to its mission i.e. show commitment to the people by serving all their needs. Smith Corona also adopts a forward looking as it has intensified the manufacture of its products. For instance, the company currently boasts of 120 different stocks in products. The company also remains committed to serving the customers as it guarantees same day delivery at low costs.


Financially, Toshiba’s performance has grown as evidenced in the financial performance in the recent years. In 2010, for instance the free cash flow stood at Y159 billion. The debt-to equity ratio also improved by 125%. By the end of the financial year 2013, Toshiba expects to accelerate its growth by further improving the debt-to-equity ratio to 50% (Toshiba America Inc, 2012).  Toshiba needs to intensify its diversification of electronic products with emphasis on having a wider global presence than before. The company should strive to manufacture products that fit each locality hence serve the diverse needs of customers.


Smith Corona performance has not been impressive with total revenue decreasing year after year. In 1997 revenues and gross profits stood at $77milliom, but by 1999, the revenues were at $44million. The decline in revenues is attributed to the change in customers’ needs as the world moves from the era of type writers to an era of technology and use of computers (Smith Corona Corporation, 2011). Smith Corona needs to diversify its line of product and services. This will increase their customer base hence increased sales and revenues.
